Protect the rights of Seattle families

Friends,
Today the anti-gay measure Referendum 71 qualified for the ballot. R71 is aimed at blocking an expansion of domestic Partnership rights was already signed by Governor Gregiore in May. Opponents of gay rights are hoping that the voters will deny equality to the over 5,000 committed LGBTQ domestic partners in Washington State. Let’s prove them wrong!

As a lifetime equal rights advocate, a City Council candidate who is committed to protecting and expanding rights for the LGBTQ community, and a close personal friend to many gay couples, I urge you to start spreading the word about R71 now. We must do all we can to support and protect the diversity that makes Seattle great. We can not tolerate backwards movement on issues of equality. Tell all of your friends and family to get out and vote to approve Referendum 71.

As your next City Councilmember, I will also do my part to continue advocating for the many pressing issues facing the LGBTQ community. Here are some specifics of my platform:

  • Ensure the coalition at the City is strong fighting to both protect domestic partnerships and for the freedom to marry.
  • Work with elected officials and police closely to ensure that legislation and police action reflect the seriousness of hate crimes and that these crimes are dealt with proactively and with zero tolerance.
  • In times of decreasing budgets, protect public health clinics and programs that offer HIV prevention services and counseling.
  • Require that anti-discrimination laws remain strong, are enforced and that diversity continues to be a focus of HR training.
  • Work with schools and the non-profit community to create safe spaces for youth who are learning about themselves and their sexuality.
  • Economic development, tourism and small business support for GLBT owned businesses and businesses that serve the GLBT community.

This is bigger than a City Council campaign – it is about our rights, about our families, the future of our community and we must stand together. Please spread the word to approve Ref-71 and protect domestic partnership laws.

In solidarity,

Jessie
